This year marks 30 years since the first Ashoka fellows began their work. According to David Bornstein 's book, How to Change the World: Social Entrepreneurs and the Power of New Ideasone of Drayton's college professors once described him as having "the determination of Job and the brains of a Nobel laureate.
In an interview last week in Boston Drayton frequently evoked his mantra that "Everyone is a changemaker. Some portions of that wide-ranging interview are below, condensed and somewhat rearranged — since Drayton tends to move quickly from subject to subject, idea to related idea, regardless of the original question asked.
Bill Drayton: Understanding social entrepreneurship is a challenge. It's getting less so because people are understanding it more. Entrepreneurs are about changing the system, the larger patterns. That's where we make the distinction between entrepreneur and changemaker. It's not defined by subject matter. And B they're committed to the good of all. It's not "corporate social responsibility" — a little footnote off at the edge — but right at the core.

This is another thing that is very confusing. Traditionally, when you start thinking about "entrepreneur" you start thinking about business.

Saint Francis of Assisi was. None of these people were in business. Around business become entrepreneurial and just took off and became highly productive and grew in scale and globalized. All around the world except for a few places like Burma [Myanmar] where government got in the way the citizen sector shifted and became entrepreneurial and competitive.
And over three decades, which in a historical time frame is short, it's been catching up fast with business in productivity, scale, and globalization.
So now both [business and social service organizations] are entrepreneurial and competitive and there isn't that much difference in scale and productivity. We are our parents' children but we're also very much the children of the schools and the universities we attend. As such, our commitment to liberal education must include a commitment to shaping the "whole" person. A liberally educated person is more than knowledgeable. A liberally educated person is ready and confident to deal with all dimensions in life. There has been a profound historical change recently, and it happened so quickly that perceptions about social entrepreneurship are lagging way behind.

As a result of this change, the citizen sector is rapidly closing the productivity gap and the field is growing very fast. This affects the strategic environment for business, government, and universities, and it's opening up major new career opportunities for everyone--students, donors, alumni and alumnae, and other constituents. Most people have not seen this change. However, this move toward entrepreneurship greatly leverages the position of those committed to liberal education. The facts presented in Figure 1 are familiar but no less staggering for that.
It is profoundly troubling that 50 percent of the world's people have 5 percent of the world's income. This is not fair, sustainable, or safe. But this is the reality. And this reality is really where the Ashoka idea begins. After reading about and loving Asia for years, I went to India as a nineteen-year-old college student. Those statistics became people. As the need to act became ever more pressing, the idea for Ashoka was born and its heart began to beat.
That this happened while I was an undergraduate at Harvard College is no accident. Being part of a culture steeped in the liberal arts led me both to ask the right questions and to feel empowered to question the status quo.
The origin of Ashoka illustrates how students can be encouraged to be proactive, critical thinkers. However, young people are the last large group of people in the world we treat the way we used to treat women, older people, people with disabilities, African Americans, and colonialized peoples. We say to them, "We are in charge of everything--the classroom, the workplace, extracurricular activities where they still exist, and sports--and we don't think you young people are very competent or responsible.
For the most part, adults discourage these efforts.He did not disappoint. You went to school to learn a trade or a skill — baking, farming or accounting. Then you could go into the work force and make a good living repeating the same skill over the course of your career.
The new world requires a different sort of person. Drayton calls this new sort of person a changemaker. Changemakers are people who can see the patterns around them, identify the problems in any situation, figure out ways to solve the problem, organize fluid teams, lead collective action and then continually adapt as situations change.
He created an app, called Haus, that allows people to network with their neighbors. The app has a panic button that alerts everybody in the neighborhood when a crime is happening.
It allows neighbors to organize, chat, share crime statistics and work together. Millions of people already live with this mind-set. But a lot of people still inhabit the world of following rules and repetitive skills. The central challenge of our time, Drayton says, is to make everyone a changemaker. To do that you start young. Your kid is She tells you about some problem — the other kids at school are systematically mean to special-needs students.
This is a big moment. Very few kids take action to solve the first problem they see, but eventually they come back having conceived and owning an idea. They organize their friends and do something. The adult job now is to get out of the way. Put the kids in charge. She has the power. She will always be needed. Is she practicing changemaking? In an earlier era, he says, society realized it needed universal literacy.
Today, schools have to develop the curriculums and assessments to make the changemaking mentality universal. They have to understand this is their criteria for success. Ashoka has studied social movements to find out how this kind of mental shift can be promoted. It turns out that successful movements take similar steps.
First, they gather a group of powerful and hungry co-leading organizations. Second, the group is opened to everybody.From the Istanbul Airport to Baton Rouge; from Baghdad to Dallas; it's been a difficult few weeks around the world recently with security tightening, fear rising and tensions boiling. Yet as I turn 32 years old today how did that happen?!
I am even more optimistic for the future of our world, not less. I'm driven by the belief that anyone -- and everyone -- can be a changemaker. They just need the inspiration and tools to make the change I know they are capable of. And if there's one thing that these past few weeks have made clear it's this: the world needs more changemakers. Since changemaking comes in many different shapes and sizes, here is a list of 32 in celebration of my 32nd year ways you can be a changemaker:.
Rally a community towards collective action. Perform acts of microleadership. Take something you've done countless times one way and see what happens when you try a completely fresh, new approach. Volunteer -- check out Taproot and Catchafire for short-term, pro-bono opportunities with non-profits. Create a working group at your company to make your organization more inclusive and to better support a diverse workforce. Help at a school -- whether it's your kid's school, the neighborhood school or your Alma Mater, think about how you might give back.
Give a talk about your career path, help out with an after-school or community activity or offer to review college applications. Start a "changemaker bookclub," bringing together friends to read and discuss books about social change. Run a race where you raise money from friends and family for a cause it's also a great way to connect with a tribe of likeminded changemakers.

Beyond donating, deepen your impact by becoming part of their community. Become a mentor -- there's almost certainly someone who looks up to you and could learn from you. Proactively offer your help before they can ask.

Changemakers are relentless. Picture a child who wants to recycle plastic to protect local wildlife. By doing so, she has taken her first steps in changemaking. Changemakers cannot just parachute into a community as an outsider who has come to save the day.
They must be personally connected to the issue they want to solve. Take the example of Khalid al-Khudaira social entrepreneur who focuses on creating jobs for women in Saudi Arabia. Further, changemaking is not just the domain of a privileged few. Not every changemaker launches their own startup. For instance, a cell-phone company employee worked to help informal businesses in slum areas function by giving them mailing addresses through mobile phonesor a pharmaceutical company employee began working on cheap, accurate, paper-based diagnostic kits for anemia after a family friend died without being diagnosed.
We live in a rapidly transforming, increasingly interconnected world. The size and complexity of global challenges needs changemakers of every shape and size. And while the Clintons were among the first politicians to publicly embrace the association, our country—and our future—depends upon changemakers across the political spectrum.
